The Three-Stage Self-Empathy Process™


Stage 1: Self-Awareness

Before you can understand anyone else, you need to understand yourself. This stage teaches you to catch your emotional reactions before they drive your decisions. You’ll learn how to notice what's happening inside you, in real time, so you can choose your response instead of defaulting to it.


Stage 2: Perspective-Taking

Most conflict doesn't come from bad intentions, it comes from misinterpretation. This stage teaches you to pause your first story about what's happening, ask better questions, and see situations more accurately. It's the difference between reacting and understanding.


Stage 3: Action-Oriented Temperament

This is the stage where everything changes. With clarity about yourself and the people around you, you make better decisions, communicate more effectively, and show up as the person you've always known you could be.

Behind the framework

My doctoral research explored empathy, emotion, and moral psychology, and led me back to one question: Why can intelligent, capable women understand everyone around them, yet still struggle to understand themselves?

The answer, I found, often lies in how we understand and use empathy.

Empathy is not simply about feeling deeply or caring more. Without self-awareness, perspective, and intentional action, we can become so focused on understanding others that we lose sight of our own needs, patterns, and responses.

We overextend. We explain away behaviour that hurts us. We question our own reactions. We struggle to set boundaries because we understand everyone else’s reasons.

This insight became the foundation of my approach to Self Intelligence Coaching.

Self-intelligence is the ability to understand what is happening within you, recognize the patterns shaping your choices, and respond in ways that reflect your needs, values, and self-worth.
